Need for Mental Hospital at Palakkad District

Palakkad District is the most backward district in Keraia State. It is also one among the 42 districts in India identified as "most backward". The population of the district is about 27 lakhs. This district has a very large population of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes (SC & ST). The tribals in the hill areas are mostly illiterate and are addicted to illicit liquor and drugs without any gender difference. The chief occupation of the population is agriculture and today the situation is such that many farmers had to commit suicide due to financial bankruptcy. The state of economy is static, the educational standards are falling due to lack of facilities, health and health care a mirage, social cohesion an enigma; thus the over all progress of this district is a far away dream. Mental health, the basic requirement for improving standard of living, and social progress is afar and mental illnesses are in ascend due to factors afore said. Mental illness is a real social problem, the individuals and the families who suffer continuously are helpless to combat the STIGMA and associated isolation in the society. Superstition and lack of awareness about the disease and the possible cure/control if treated in time and regularly, are major hurdles to overcome. This disturbing trend is to be curtailed on a war footing level. It is in this context we have stepped in to help the helpless mentally ill persons and their families from total ruin. The highest priority is to establish a full fledged Mental Health Hospital Complex to deal with the alarming situation and to fill the void for early detection, effective treatment and rehabilitation of mentally ill persons. There is no mental hospital in the district at present and there are only very few psychiatric doctors. Thus there is a prime need for a hospital complex exclusively for mental health.
